Shepherd Center Undergoes $53 Million Expansion
According to a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Atlanta Shepherd Center is in the process of undergoing a major construction project: a $53 million renovation and expansion that will double the size of the hospital.
The Shepherd Center, started in a175 with only six beds, and now at 120 beds is one of the nation’s top medical facilites for catastrophic injury.
Due to massive amounts of construction in Atlanta that the number of workers who are seriously injured has been on the rise. The hospital, which is a $100 million-a-year nonprofit, added 171,480 square feet and renovated another 86,850 square feet, which included making its cafeteria four times larger. It expanded office space, added private rooms and expanded day-patient facilities, all to serve 750 patients each year and to handle 24,000 visits in outpatient care.
“We keep a very close counting of the money that has been donated; we don’t just say give us $3 million and we’ll do our best,” she said.
The Shepherd Center is also building 84 apartments, the Woodruff Family Housing complex, which is being built on the front of the parking deck. It will allow day patients to continue their rehabilitation at Shepherd and have a comfortable place to live.
