Jousting With Windmills While Basking In The Sun

I received a copy of a “clean energy” fund-raising letter that Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club e-broadcast on June 13. The Sierra Club supports the “Consumer-First Energy Act of 2008″ (S. 3044).

The 3rd paragraph of the letter reads:
“Right now, Senator McCain is running ads in Ohio featuring wind turbines and images of clean energy sources, yet Senator McCain opposes requiring (please note this - REQUIRING) the use of wind and solar power to generate electricity.”(1) In the bibliography item 1 references a vote by McCain three years ago, June 2005.

It is my sincere hope that Senator McCain, still today and on to tomorrow, will oppose “requiring the use of wind and solar power to generate electricity”. It is my conviction that every elected official should openly and loudly oppose “requiring the use of wind and solar power to generate electricity”.

If Carl Pope and the Sierra Club are convinced of the value of requiring wind and solar power absolutely must be used to generate electricity, then they should demonstrate their commitment. They should initiating the “requiring” process; they should be “Do-as-I-do” leaders. They should, for all leadership positions in the Sierra Club, insist that each individual and each office use solar or wind generated electricity. Every person who is a leader of the national, state and local Sierra Clubs must convert to wind or solar power to generate their electricity now.

Their new banner would be:
Wind and Solar: if you are not committed, the Sierra Club does not want you.
