Sierra Club Revisited (Again)
Presidential Endorsement
Good news from the Sierra Club. In an e-letter Executive Director Carl Pope announced on Friday, while he was visiting Cleveland, that the Sierra Club and the United Steel Workers Union had joined together to endorse a presidential candidate.
The Sierra Club chose a person who they claim “will put America on the path to a clean energy economy that creates and keeps millions of jobs, spurs innovation and opportunity, and makes us a more secure nation.”
USW President Leo Gerard endorsement included this: “….we all share the common goal of putting America back to work by building a clean energy economy.” He added that his candidate is committed to “breaking the chokehold Big Oil and the other polluting energy industries have on our economy and future.” Interesting that Mr. Gerard limited the bad guys to “Big Oil and other polluting energy industries”.
I must have missed the breakthrough that allows the manufacture of steel without burning fossil fuels and with zero pollution generation.
Steel Facts: The United States steel industry makes 7.2% of the worlds steel. The US makes 10.6% of the total steel produced by the top four producers. The four are China, the EU, Japan and the US. If the Soviet Union was still around we would be 5th.
I doubt that Mr. Gerard or Mr. Pope would acknowledge that their organizations and groups like them are largely responsible for US producing only 7.2% of the world’s steel. And all those Steelworkers as well as those employed by supporting industries being unemployed.
